London Techno King Slams Sharon & Tracy Superclubs

Techno DJ/promoter Jim Masters spoke to Skrufff this week and revealed he believes greedy DJs and overly casual superclubs are behind the current woes afflicting clubland.

"There's no difference between going to a club in Ibiza and your local Sharon and Tracy disco on the high street," said Jim.

"Serious clubbers, or rather people that aren't Sharon and Tracy types, have always wanted an element of elitism; they want to feel they're doing something that's cutting edge or at least not the same as the people who drink 15 pints down the pub," he added.

Chatting to Skrufff about the imminent relaunch of his own night Ultimate Base (at Crash, September 5) the former Ministry Of Sound promoter suggested DJ fees, including his own, have finally reached their limit.

"I've definitely made a conscious effort to lower my fees," he revealed.

"Because I know as a promoter, how difficult it is at the moment. Some other DJs are still increasing their fees and putting promoters out of business then wondering why there isn't so much work around. It's almost like raping and pillaging a country; once one territory has been exhausted, everyone moves onto the next. First it was Europe, then Asia and the Middle East. Eventually there's nowhere left for anyone to play."

Ultimate Base goes monthly at Crash from Friday September 5, kicking off with Detroit pioneer Kevin Saunderson, Trevor Rockliffe, and Jim. Tickets cost £12.00
