Knee Deep in it

Superbird (Sebastian Döring) and Toddie (Torsten Freese) aka Knee Deep are both great in bed. I don't know that from personal experience exactly but that's what they told me.

"We are both incredible lovers. I know you guessed that but here's the proof in writing."

Not to be confused with the Funkadelic track of the same name, Superbird and Toddie are not exactly sure where their name came from.

"We remembered using that name for a party a few years ago, don't know why we called it that then either, but it sounded good and we like the word deep."

Knee Deep sparked the attention of the house music scene after remixing Afro Medusa's 'Pasilda'. Its fiery Latin summer feel turned it into a world wide hit and simultaneously launched Knee Deep into the limelight.

"This was first time that we realised what we could achieve. Before we were happy if we'd find one of our productions on a famous DJs playlist, but this was a record everybody played. Even Josh Wink called me."

Before they became a household name Superbird was remixing and producing in Hamburg with Daniel Klein and they had admirable success under the name Kiez Kidz. Superbird and Toddie met whilst clubbing and were later asked to remix D'Influence - 'Rock With You' by a friend at Universal. The pair have remained a production team ever since.

They first began producing their signature soulful and driving grooves under the now departed R.O.I (Records of Interest). This has since lead to joining UK's Defected and producing remixes for Soul Searchers, ATFC, Olav Basoski, Astrotrax, Johnny Corporate, David Morales, Full Intention, Craig David and Jamiroquai.

As their list of clients becomes more impressive, the pressure upon Superbird and Toddie has been mounting, but being perfectionists and DJs does make this a little easier, well sometimes.

"Naturally, there is more pressure on us now, but we have always been perfectionists. We just work harder to make sure that our production, composing, drums, mixing and the little details are absolutely right.

As DJs we get more critical about the stuff we buy/play because we hear it differently, I don't know if that's a good thing in the end but I can't change it."

Earlier this year the pair formed Knee Deep Recordings from which Melbourne's DJ Jorj became their first and highly successful release. A success which meant a whole lot more after having to compete with Germany's flourishing electro scene.

"This year hasn't really been the best. Everybody in Germany is into electro which meant that many labels didn't have any money for house remixes. This forced us to go into our own productions and in the end that has been the best thing for us. There is plenty going on in the studio right now. We just had a wicked session with Paul Timothy (Wikkaman - 'Just That Way', Knee Deep rec. and Soulcentral - 'The Vow' Kenlou rec.) which should be good for at least 2 vocal tracks next year. We are also working on producing r'n'b and hip-hop."

Whether it is the combination of funk, soul and enchanting grooves or the percussive drum rolls and momentum that has you anticipating Knee Deep's 4 deck show, their intention is clear.

"We will be getting' into the vibe with the help of a few drinks, we don't care about our inability to mix, we just want to kick ass."
