Overdub is:
Jim Z >synths/ sounds/ fx and textures
Dave Basek > beats/ dub and samples

Formed from the Lismore scene in '97 overdub was originally a three piece featuring the vocal talents of Adam Bulmer. Adam left the group after a decision to move to Melbourne in '99. Basek and Jim Z kept performing together and eventually formed what are now the '20 for 7' jazz collective. After recording and co-producing with the H-foundation in 2002 the boys decided to reinvent the overdub sound and integrate their new ideas for production into a live performance on the 'dark room' tip.

Basek had been involved in the Dj industry in Sydney briefly before moving to Lismore/ Byron Bay. On arrival to the area basek was quick to start a night amongst the already bustling live music scene that was electronic. The first night of its kind in the area 'electricks' drew together many of the local musicians who would jam along with the grooves and it was here that Jim Z began collaborating with Basek and not long after the boys started working on their vision for a live electronic outfit.

After the departure of Adam Bulmer, overdub performed with a number of talented vocalists, unable to gel conceptually with many of the performers basek and Jimeah Z began to record and sample Adams vocals to play via CDR over their sets. This simple idea led to the boys incorporating recordings of solo instrumentalists, field environments and noise floors to create a unique and twisted atmosphere within which they shape their solid dance grooves and forms the basis for the unique sound that is overdub.

Being passionate dance music enthusiasts and observing the skills the likes of HMC, Phil Smart and Ray Good in the Dj booth Overdub were determined take the concept of the Dj's journey 'set' and apply it to a totally live performance.

In an overdub set, the focus is on the dance floor yet is not restricted by prearranged 'songs' or tempo, overdub carve a sonic groove that combines elements of hip hop, dub, house and techno with lush soundscapes and melodic textures, into a totally live performance that is unique every time…
