10% of newly infected HIV patients in Europe are being infected with drug resistant strains, according to new research published this week, which suggested already infected people taking medication and having unsafe sex or needle sharing are to blame.

One of the scientists involved in the study, Dr Gulick from Cornell Weil Medical College, told the New York Times that prevention efforts should be widened to include infected people as well as others.

"You need to tell them, `You have the infection but you shouldn't spread it to other people,' " he told the Times.
