Getting Connected with Chris Lum

Author: Chloe Burke
Friday, December 19, 2003
Chris Lum believes that most of his success is due to witchcraft, and lots of it. Spells or not there is no denying that when this San Franciscan based DJ and Producer is behind the decks or in the studio, he makes it happen.

Preferring not to describe his sound as anything beyond 'house', Chris makes music how he wants to. If you take a listen to the 'Bigger Tool EP' and 'Freaks like Us', (a collaboration with long time production partner Jay-J) you will discover that the Chris Lum sound is a vibrant package of energetic, soulful and funky house, with the bar for quality set to the highest of levels.

Inspired by Wayne Gardiner, Tiefschwartz, Penn and Chus and his 'musical beacon of hope' Paul van Dyk, Chris will once again be arriving on Australian shores to help us bring in the New Year. TranZfusion threw a few questions Chris's way to which we received some rather entertaining responses.

How has the year 2003 been for you, any standout moments-
Everything pales in comparison to the birth of Tai Maxwell Lum. But a grammy nomination (and subsequent trip to the Grammies) 3 trips to Australia (thanks SAM and PAM), heaps of new friends and another year alive to ride this crazy rollercoaster are close in the running. I must have done something speacial in a past life, either that or I'm actually living in a reality TV show.

How has your sound evolved over the years-
From shit to shite. Allthough, I think now it's just a bit less stinky. I think my sound has evolved opposable thumbs as well. Freaky!!!

How do you gauge your success as an artist-
On whether or not I am respectful and humble to others, and if I feel good about my creative output. Success as a business man I'm still trying to work on.

You have had so many successes as a producer, what do you believe makes a good track great-
I can only gauge and trust my own reaction to it. If I like it, it's good. I rarely think anything I do is great. Well, except my ice sculptures of former US presidents.

You have a tremendous working relationship with Jay-J, what does he bring to the partnership-
Sometimes M&M's or a snickers or something. Maybe a large pizza, Ummm Pizza. Now that's tremendous!

When in the studio, who is the most anal out of the two of you-
Not everyone in San Francisco is gay ya know!

What are you currently working on in the studio-
Getting ready for my journey back to OZ and some secret stuff that only Santa has at the momment.

5 words to describe the Chris Lum expereince, when you hit the decks here in Melbourne-
Dirty, Sweaty, Funky, Fun and Sharring

Tell me something we wouldnt know about Chris Lum...
That he is...In Fact...The bastard son of Jon Major.
Ever wonder WHY-...he comes back so often- Hmmmm.
