Right wing professional puritan and syndicated radio personality Rush Limbaugh confessed this week to being secretly addicted to painkiller drugs, after tabloid revelations suggested he'd illegally bought thousands of pills on the black market.

"I need to tell you today that part of what you have heard and read is correct," Limbaugh told his 20million listeners.

"I am addicted to prescription painkillers."

Acccording to media reports, the multi-millionnaire's drug of choice is OxyContin, an opiate painkiller colloquially known as 'hillbilly heroin' due to its popularity with poor Americans. According to a report in Florida newspaper the Decatur Daily, the drug has become particularly popular because of the ease with which it's ingested.

"Addicts can crush the water-soluble pills and inject them, chew them or snort them for a heroin-like rush," the newspaper quoted Sergeant Faron White of the Decatur Police Department as saying.

"A rush that is sometimes fatal."

While Limbaugh is largely unknown outside the States, his humiliation is hugely significant, according to British newspaper The Guardian.

"No-one in modern America has done more than him to promote intolerance of liberal ideas about race, sexuality and lifestyles," The paper said in a leader column.

"One of the favoured targets of Mr Limbaugh's broadcasts has been drug users."

Despite the broadcaster's hypocrisy 'political soul-mate' and long term friend George Bush is standing by him, the Observer revealed this week, apparently telling aides, "Rush is a great American, I am confident he can overcome any obstacles he faces right now."

Whether Rush will have to overcome dropping his soap in a jailhouse shower looks unlikely, despite his previously well known enthusiasm for treating addicts without mercy.

"Drug use destroys societies, drug use, some might say is destroying this country," he complained on his radio show some years ago.

"And so if people are violating the law by doing drugs, they ought to be convicted and they ought to be sent up (to jail)."
