Young American men hanging out in gay clubs and Pride festivals are vastly more likely to use drugs than average men, according to research published this week by the American Journal of Public Health.

59% admitted they'd smoked pot in the last 6 months compared to 37 of young men in general, while for cocaine the figures for lifetime usage were 31% of gay clubbers compared to 14% of others.

Interestingly, heterosexual and bisexual men hanging in gay clubs were reportedly the heaviest users (planetout.com) suggesting gay acting straights (aka metrosexuals) could be taking their copycat behaviour too far. Indeed, writing in this week's Guardian, journalist Mark Simpson, who claimed he invented the metrosexual term in 1994, suggested that 'gay fabulousness is a myth'.

"Gays may have provided a self-obsessed prototype for metrosexuality, but this doesn't mean they are still ahead of the curve," he declared.

"As much younger, hipper people than I might say: 'so gay- so over'."
