Plucky French surf enthusiasts caused outrage in California last week after entering one of their waves in a competition to measure the world's biggest surfed wave.

The two Frenchmen surfed the 64 foot wave off the Basque Coast, in the Bay Of Biscay and came within two feet of beating the winning 66 footer off Hawaii.

"The French have a lot of good things," an irate American sniffed on Surfer magazine's message board.

"But military backbone and big waves aren't included."
