New York celebrity barman Toby Cecchini claimed this week that most Manhattan glass-washers despise British customers, principally because of their unwillingness to tip.

"The British who come to New York are arrogant, clueless freaks, playing the noblesse oblige card", the cocktail king sneered.

"I've just met so many of these awful people" (Daily Telegraph).

His comments came days after long-term Englishman-in-New York/ 80s pop star Joe Jackson announced he was quitting Manhattan for England, to escape the city's puritanically harsh new anti-smoking laws.

"Lets face it, the Yanks do have a worrying history of sanctimoniously charging off in wrong directions," said Joe.

"You have to wonder if there's something darker at work than concern for public health. A lurking need in society to have some minority to beat up on, now that every other minority is off limits," he added.

DJ magazine's bon viveur Brit Simon A Morrison also appears to be going off the city, judging by his latest piece in DJ.

"She (New York City) is as gorgeous a creature as ever," said Simon.

"But there is a puritanical cancer rotting inside her like some sick perverse joke with no punch-line."

Brits-in-NY this weekend include Discordinated, Boy George and Jonny and Fil from Nag/ Atomizer at Larry Tee's Outsider Festival, which opens new superclub Crobar this Friday [December 12].
