Ecstasy & Cocaine Frankenstein Threat

Italian scientists claimed this week that taking either ecstasy or cocaine might cause genetic mutations in the user, raising the possibility that drug users who later have children could spawn an army of genetically modified children.

"These drugs attack DNA, provoking mutations and altering the hereditary material," research boss Giorgio Bronzetti told Reuters.

"This is very worrying for the effects it could have on future generations."

The Italian report came as Britain's Home Office published new figures suggesting the number of young ecstasy users has plummeted 70,000 in the last year, with cocaine use significantly up amongst 16-24 year olds, prompting the Standard to warn of an 'explosion in cocaine use'.

"Cocaine use accounts for half of all drug-related deaths in the US," said Standard medical adviser Dr Mark Porter.

"The chances of dying (typically from a direct toxic effect on the heart, causing it to beat irregularly, convulsions and brain damage) are estimated at around 1 in 2,000 for every 12 months of use," he said.

'Some anti-drug organisations will list cocaine psychosis as the inevitable side-effect of casual use. It's not. You have to work to get there, but it's easy not to notice how close you're getting. Good news: stop the coke, if you can, and you will revert back to normal . . .'
