Martin Gore, the Depeche mode keyboardist with a long time penchant for fetish gear and cross dressing is releasing a new solo covers album including a version of David Essex's Stardust. The new album also includes takes of Iggy Pop's Tiny Girls and The Velvet Underground's 'Candy Says' though it's his choice of David Essex's post-fame burnout anthem Stardust which is likely to cause most surprise,

"I really wanted to get across a fan's perspective," said Gore.

"There is something about the songs I like that somehow gives the album a thread. Deep emotions, I suppose. There has to be a personal connection."

Gore's cheerful confession of feeling a personal connection with Essex, could signal a critical renaissance for the 70s teen heart throb, who previously inhabited othe kind of critical hinterland nowadays occupied by karaoke king Robbie Williams. Chillout duo Bent also recently sampled him on a track for the upcoming album Everlasting Blink.

"Counterfeit2" is set to be released in April on Mute Records.
