Free Association mainman David Holmes has recorded a haunting new version of Rodriguez' 60s hit Sugarman, after featuring the original on his compilation CD, last year. Holmes' new version includes a backing vocal from Rodriguez himself, who'd fallen on hard times in the intervening years.

"I bought Rodriguez's album Cold Fact six years ago for $100 just to get Sugarman," he said this week.

"I put it on Come Get It, I got It' and people loved it and because of the exposure it got, Rodriguez got in touch and said he was alive and well and working as a labourer in Detroit. He never made a cent out of Sugarman and really wanted to re-do it with us."

The Free Association's Sugarman is out on 13 Amp Records in August, with two additional remixes; an electro style workout by Maurice Fulton and an even better re-interpretation by Chilly Gonzalez.
