American scientists studying side effects of marijuana announced this week that the drug could have an unexpected role in birth control, with regular smokers producing significantly less sperm.

"The bottom line is, the active ingredients in marijuana are doing something to sperm, and the numbers are in the direction toward infertility," study chief Doctor Lani J. Burkman told the annual meeting of the American Society of Reproductive Medicine, in Texas (The Guardian).

"The sperms from marijuana smokers were moving too fast too early."

"The timing was all wrong," he continued.

"These sperm will experience burnout before they reach the egg and would not be capable of fertilization."

Discredited US drugs scientist George Ricuarte was understood to have played no part in the study.
