Yashar(remixes)

Yashar‚ originally appeared on the highly acclaimed LP 2x45, recorded in 1981. It was an early piece of ethno-techno, with a distinct middle eastern vibe. The track became an underground club hit circa 1983, after a remix by John Robie. Robie had a massive electro hit as Bank‚, with the track One More Shot‚, as well as also shaping the sound of Afrika Bambaata & Soulsonic Force‚s electro classic Planet rock‚.

Frankfurt Uberduo Alter Ego (aka Roman Flugel and Jörn Elling Wutke) turn in an upbeat reworking with plenty of floor-potential. Never one (or two) to do things by halves, their remix clocks in at just under 10 minutes, and meshes elements of the original with a driving analogue backbeat, and throws some glitchier dynamics in for good measure.
This looks set to ensure that this track will go down well on more Œconventional‚ techno dancefloors, as well as find an audience at some of the more fashionable electro-influenced nights.

This reworking by Richard H. Kirk contains a mish-mash of styles, but is executed to great effect. The atmosphere builds slowly around a low, muttered voice, whilst indications of the eventual track‚s momentum is hinted at. Once the beat does kick in, it does so with a great lurching feel, as a mixture of breakbeat and electro. A 303 bubbles away in the background, whilst the listener‚s attention is grabbed by a vocodered vocal. Some clever edits make sure the track‚s flow never stays the same for too long without switching pace, which yields interesting, yet body-moving results.

AA2)
The All Seeing I twists the original‚s childlike vocalizations into a groove which he locks down with slow electro drums. A live-sounding bass adds a surprisingly funky feel to the remix ˆ sounding good at the slower pace. Elsewhere, retro, but nicely un-cliched synths paint layer after layer of melodic hooks into the track.

The original version of Yashar appears on the Cabaret Voltaire album 'The Original Sound of Sheffield 78/82 BEST OF' released last year. A 3 CD Box set of previously unreleased Cabaret Voltaire material 'Methodology, The Attic Tapes 74/78' is released on May 19th. Both releases are available on The Grey Area of Mute.
