Belgium has become the latest European country to decriminalise cannabis, introducing small fines for low level possession offences from the 1st of June.

Possession of 1 plant or up to three grams (less than an eighth- still a tiny amount) will be punishable with a warning and fine of between 15 and 25 Euros, the Drug Policy Alliance reported this week, though smokers caught more than once a year face increasingly severe penalties. Smoking near children, schools and soldiers will also be treated much more seriously, the DPA article warned.

However, Belgium is not going down the coffee shop supply route favoured by neighbouring country Holland, presumably hoping each smoker will start cultivating individual plants.
