Are You A Drug Addict-

England's Observer newspaper ran a rare spotlight on the usually secretive drugs rehabilitation organisation Narcotics Anonymous (NA) this week, and revealed that the first question NA ask potential recruits is 'Do you ever use alone-'

Other addiction qualifying questions include, 'Have you taken one drug to overcome the effect of another-' and 'Have you lied about what or how much you use-' though they stress each user must decide if they're an addict by themselves.

Skrufff's new contributor Larry Tee, who joined NA after his ketamine habit spiralled out of control in 1995, told Skrufff that he'd read through the same questionnaire when he first considered joining.

"The NA question that most struck me, since they all applied to me, was 'did it affect my work-'" said Larry.

"Clubs would hire me to stagger around as a 'host' since I was still well known from the early nineties but I was actually unable to work at that point. My ears could no longer differentiate the good music from the mediocre, which is death for a DJ."

Ironically, the electroclash founder's true rock bottom moment came after he joined NA, from a source beyond his control.

"All my buddies started getting into heroin after ketamine became difficult to procure in new York and three weeks after I got clean, the lead singer of my techno-punk group, The Hustlers, died of an overdose. It broke my heart," he recalled.

Nowadays working as a councillor for NA, Larry admitted that he initially found giving up drugs extremely tough.

"I had a hard time fitting in at first, but one of the friends from my club life grabbed me and said 'it will be SO good in the future'. In NA, they say you can live beyond your wildest dreams and it turned out to be true. I never have had such a great time as I have now," he said.
