American Travellers Urged to Pretend They're Canadian

Anti-US sentiment is now so widespread that Americans are being advised to disguise themselves as Canadians, a report in the Observer revealed this week. The advice to act Canadian appeared in a guide by US travel company Europe By The Backdoor, while another in USA Today urged American travellers to 'be ready for harsh words'.

"Take a rain check on wearing clothes featuring American flags or sports team logos," Bruce McIndoe, CEO of iJet Travel Intelligence, told USA Today.

"Soften your speech; Americans typically overshadow their hosts in the volume department."

The advice could be of relevance to globe trotting US DJs, judging by comments from techno types Bryan Zentz and Recloose's Matt Chicoine, who discussed the issue with Skrufff in recent (softly spoken) interviews in London.

"People do have a bad impression of Americans and I think that's understandable," said Bryan last month.

"I haven't had anybody disrespect me outright though I've had some interesting conversations."

Matt Chicoine, who left Detroit to live New Zealand last year, told Skrufff that he'd been broadly welcomed by locals, though more for his music than his roots.

"Our accents our fucked up and generally we're a pretty loud and obnoxious group of people so I'm trying to do my best to lessen that image through my travels," Matt admitted.

"But even if I don't get the DJ from Detroit thing, I can still go into a shop and get the 'Yankee Go Home' shit."
