Connie Fozzard, the highly respected Mayor of Truro, Cornwall, became the latest establishment figure to call for ecstasy legalisation to be considered this week, in a debate at the British Medical Association's annual conference.

"I have no doubt that it would be wise to decriminalise drugs," she said. "At the moment some of the (associated) problems are due to the fact they are not getting the drug in pure form.

This would not happen if they were available from licensed premises. We are an adult society and should treat people as adults." (The Standard)

Speaking to the Observer before the conference debate, Ms Fozzard also pointed out that decriminalising drugs would remove the vast majority of drug related crime improving society in general.

"At the moment you have got so many people who are frightened in their own homes and frightened out of them, simply because of the muggings and burglaries which are done to fuel a habit."

Her comments coincided with renewed calls from drugs charity Drugscope to look at downgrading ecstasy from Class A where it's currently classified alongside heroin and crack cocaine, to reflect its 'less harmful' nature.
