Large numbers of clubbers are regularly damaging their hearing and face permanent and irreversible hearing loss as they approach middle age, according to new research published by the Royal National Institute for the Death (RNIB).

73% of clubbers admitted they'd experienced ringing in the ears, two thirds regularly, the survey said, suggesting huge numbers of young people are damaging their hearing each week.

"We were all brought up in a youth culture where 'If the music is too loud, you're too old', but too many people reach middle age and wish they'd listened to their parents," said Kim Morgan, from the Persula Foundation, which funded the new research.

"It is very difficult to tell someone to turn the volume down without seeming like a killjoy."

The RNIB are calling on clubs to provide more chill out space with quieter music (the length of exposure to sound plays a key role) and urge clubbers to always stand away from speakers and to use earplugs if you're a regular club/ gig-goer.
