Recreational ecstasy users who take "a few pills" each weekend "don't contribute to the crime rate" controversial former police chief Ray Mallon said this week.

Infamous for introducing New York style zero tolerance policing to the northern England city of Middlesborough when he was police chief, Mr Mallon (nowadays the city's mayor) urged the Government to focus on heroin and crack users, suggesting they were responsible for the vast majority of crime.

He told Tribune magazine that the government should recognise "the much bigger recreational drugs culture, the kids who live on nice estates, take a few pills in a nightclub and go to work on a Monday morning. They're not contributing to the crime rate."
