Superclub organisation Gatecrasher are abandoning weekly club nights at their Sheffield headquarters in favour of monthly "special events", Gatecrasher chief Simon Raines said this week.

"It's like the Emperor's New Clothes, everyone's thinking it but no one wants to say it - our industry is now geared towards large events and weekly club nights have had their chips (are finished)," he suggested.

"I know for a fact that all clubs are under-performing at the moment, it's getting harder to book big DJs because of their international commitments, and clubbers are more interested in going to big events."

His announcement came days before Liverpool superclub Cream revealed they'll be transforming their courtyard room into a live music venue within weeks with alternative heroes Echo & the Bunnymen already booked to perform.

"The Courtyard is an incredible venue with a world-class reputation, and has had a history of programming live music within a dance arena," said Cream promoter Iain Hoskins.

"This also allows us to refocus on other areas of the club."

Gatecrasher are also maintaining a positive spin on their changes, pointing out that they're also launching a London monthly at Heaven from April 26. Paul Van Dyk will be headlining the launch.

Their summer festival and record activities also continue, with a new double compilation Gatecrasher- Digital Trance coming out late May. Cream too, are maintaining their prolific album release schedules, with Cream Anthems Spring out now on Virgin.
