New legislation currently passing through America's legal system could see club promoters being sentenced to 9 years in jail, if drugs users are caught at their events. Under the terms of the bill, which is being proposed by Californian Congressman Doug Ose, virtually anyone connected with even publicising an event where drugs are sold or consumed could be at risk of jail.

"Whoever knowingly promotes any rave, dance, music, or other entertainment event, that takes place under circumstances where the promoter knows or reasonably ought to know that a controlled substance will be used or distributed . .. shall be fined … or imprisoned for not more than 9 years, or both," the legislation proposes.

The incredibly draconian law coincides with another proposal in California to force any promoter putting on a dance event for more than 1,000 people to prove their drugs awareness knowledge to local cops. Promoters will need to prove they're "sufficiently knowledgeable about illegal drugs and drug paraphernalia that they or their agents can recognize the presence of drugs or drug paraphernalia at the event."

The two laws could potentially outlaw all dance events in the US, including concerts and even high school dances, EMDEF suggest.
