Civil liberties campaigners and angry US voters have succeeded in delaying the immediate implementation of the R.A.V.E. act ('reducing American's Vulnerability to Ecstasy Act') after protestors delivered over 40,000 petitions to the US Senate.

Politicians behind the bill, which threatens to annihilate dancing and club culture in the States are reported to be meeting with opponents to address their concerns, meaning it should be delayed by at least a month.

"Using the acronym RAVE was designed to force the Senate to act and disguise the serious threat to property rights, free speech and even the right to dance," said Bill McNicholl, a senior director with campaigning organisation the Drugs Policy Alliance.

"Fortunately with the Senate going into recess (ie on holiday), lawmakers can now take time to reconsider this dangerous bill."

The bill also drew fierce criticism from across America's mainstream media this week, with Fox News in particular, branding the proposals 'raving lunacy'.

"The people in charge of running the war say that we have to trust them: trust their integrity, and trust their judgment. But how can we trust our government to spot terrorists when it thinks that glow sticks are items of "drug paraphernalia-" asked Glenn Harlan Reynolds, a law professor at the University of Tennessee.

"My three-year-old nephew is fond of bottled water and glow sticks, and usually needs a 'chill room.' Presumably Senator Biden (one of the bill's chief proponents) regards him as a dangerous criminal," said the Professor.
