UK garage stars copying US rap stars by drinking vintage champagne and wearing expensive jewellery are providing a positive role model for penniless estate kids, according to So Solid singe Romeo.

"I want to show them (his fans) that it's possible for anyone to get whatever they want in life," he told the Sunday Times this week.

"I don't think it's false for rappers to talk about coming from the streets, then wear the big chains and ice (diamonds), and pop bottles of Cristal. It's sending a positive message," he claimed.

Methuselah bottles of Cristal champagne (equivalent to 8 normal bottles) cost up to £15,000 each (US$23,000) and are also popular with Puff Daddy and girl group Mis-teeq, who name checked the drink in their song One Night Stand, a fact Cristal's manufacturers admitted made them very happy.

"We're delighted people enjoy Cristal and choose to mention it in that way because we don't court publicity," Alison Dillon, marketing director of Louis Roederer UK, told the Guardian.

"It's a great endorsement of Cristal product and I think it works in a positive way because people who are fed up with being marketed at, feel like they're discovering us all by themselves."
