UK Club Crisis Restricted To Superclubs, Guardian Claim

Superclubs are "on the brink of collapse" though dance music itself is as strong as ever, Guardian clubbing expert Jacques Peretti suggested this week.

"The fact that 200,000 people turned out for Fatboy Slim's gig on Brighton beach a fortnight ago demonstrates that there's a still a massive appetite for dance music," he pointed out. "It's just that no-one wants to be charged a fortune to see the same thing in a cheesy superclub."

While Peretti's overview was well argued and largely accurate, his inattention to detail did suggest a worrying lack of knowledge about superclubs themselves.

"Nottingham's Gatecrasher closed its weekly night last month," he said, presumably forgetting that Gatecrasher's home is some 100 miles further north, in Sheffield.
