UK Cannabis Users Still Risk Jail

Upcoming changes in Britain's cannabis users means users caught with tiny amounts of the drug could still be thrown in jail, despite the drug's imminent reclassification as Class C. While people found in possession of "small amounts" will avoid prosecution, the wording of the new laws means those caught with even an eight (3.5 grams) could be jailed as suppliers.

"It can actually be less than five spliff's worth (approximately an eighth)," Release director Kevin Flemen told NME. "If I said, 'It's not mine, I'm looking after it for a mate' then technically that can be construed as intent to supply.'

Those found guilty of supplying cannabis will now face double length prison sentences and with a new survey by the Face revealing that 51% of 16-19 year olds Brits smoke pot, tens of thousands of young people could be at risk.

"Dealers will remain liable to a category B sentence (14 years). "This is too high, and could endanger students who share the weed," said the Guardian.
