Strings Of Life creator Derrick May is to start producing his own music again after years away from the studio following a drawn out litigation battle with Belgium's R&S Records. Admitting his ego had prompted his self-imposed embargo, May told Australia's 3D World recently that another factor had been his ambition to develop his own label Transmat.

"I've been trying for years to get out of this record deal so I could do other things but I cannot," he told 3D writer Cyclone.

"It was always for Transmat. It was to get the kind of distribution for my record label so that I could have my own identity, Transmat, associated with me on my records, so that Transmat would never be separate from Derrick May."

May's comments coincide with Transmat's forthcoming European release of Swedish producer Aril Brikha's debut album Departure In Time, a significant step for the Detroit based label. May reportedly discovered the Iranian born Swede after hearing his demo tape from a pile of unsolicited music sent to Transmat.

The album, a collection of late night relatively downtempo techno tunes, was released in the US in 1999 and has gone on to attract plaudits and critical acclaim far beyond the States. Departure In Time is out on April 2nd in the UK, (also on vinyl for the first time), with two additional new tracks included. Derrick May also plays at Lost's Easter Sunday event in London, alongside fellow Detroit legend Juan Atkins.
