The Beatles Responsible for Cannabis Legalisation

The Beatles were the true pioneers of cannabis legalisation, the Independent On Sunday suggested this week, as Britain came closer to finally decriminalising marijuana.

"As the Beatles generation has grown up to be the leaders of today, the use of cannabis has become so normalised, its effects long now revealed to be so much less damaging than the establishment's scaremongers would have had us believe, that decriminalisation has become almost inevitable," they said.

"We have come a long way since police raided Ringo Starr's London flat in the late 1960s."

The seminal 60s rock band were also cited as key figureheads behind cannabis' normalisation, in a recent letter published in Chicago's Sun Times, though the correspondent was less enthusiastic about their role.

"They were one of the first groups to embrace drugs openly and in turn, they influenced many impressionable people that drugs were OK, (as) just a way to have "fun" and expand your mind," said Richard Manka from Schaumburg

"Now of course America is paying for it. The Beatles were just a bunch of druggies, nothing else."
