Young Americans with tattoos and piercings are twice as likely to have sex and smoke spliff and three times as likely to take class A drugs like ecstasy and cocaine, as their non adorned peers, according to a new survey of Californian youth.

"While there's nothing inherently wrong with body piercing or tattoos, they are a wake-up call to parents and physicians that there might be something else going on," one of the study's authors Elizabeth B Myre told the Lexington Herald Leader.

"They're a marker that these kids are prone to risky behaviours."

484 people aged between 12 and 22 were examined in the survey, carried out at the Naval Medical Centre in San Diego.
