Former Soul 11 Soul singer Doreen Waddell was run down by three cars this week as she tried to escape from security guards after allegedly being caught shop lifting.

The 36 year old singer was killed as she tried to cross the 70mph A27 dual carriageway at Shoreham (near Brighton) after running out of the Tesco's supermarket.

According to media reports, Ms Waddell, who sang on several of the tracks on their breakthrough album Club Classics Volume 1, had slipped into heroin addiction around the same time (1989) and didn't sing on their worldwide pop hits Keep On Moving and Back to Life. Strikingly beautiful, she ended up living in poverty in Hove, though according to neighbours retained a quiet dignity.

"She never mentioned that she was a singer with Soul 11 Soul," one neighbour told the Standard. "She led a very different, quiet life here, a world far removed from pop stars. She was simply a single mother looking after her boy."
