Master of house genres Paul Barkworth re-opens his "very sexy, uplifting disco house" night Smokey Beats next weekend (May 17) taking over the second room of Turnmills' long running Gallery night alongside Fatboy Slim and Tall Paul in the main room.

"What we're trying to do is to change the music in room 2 into more of a US house disco style base," Paul told Skrufff.

"Smokey Beats will be hosting the US/ Subliminal/ French disco house sound with a deep edge, the kind of stuff your Erick Morillos, Sandy Riveras and Harry Choo Choo Romeros produce."

Smokey Beats previously operated out of Home's ill fated Leicester Square venue though more recently Paul presented his night at Home's new dwelling in Sydney Australia (called, inevitably Home).

"Both the gigs in Sydney were the best I've ever done," said Paul.

"The audience weren't shy to the sound but I think they liked the story involved in the set. Not too many Sydney DJs would be tempted to throw in a track like Michael Jackson's Thriller in the middle of a house set, and that's what seemed to make it work. They got funk, soul, Deee- Lite and Michael Jackson all in the middle of a French disco and US house set and they seemed to be amazed, and loving it. That's what Smokey Beats is about and I'll be pursuing the same approach at Turnmills."

Paul also insists he'll be continuing his tradition of chatting on the mike throughout his set.

Guest DJs on the night include Sancho Panza's Matt Brown, new resident Owen Snee and human beatbox BB Burn on percussion. The night will be running on the third Friday of each month with his next June-time gig rumoured to coincide with Paul Oakenfold's first London appearance this year.
