NME have turned to the Daily Star to help them compete with Kerrang magazine, and have hired a gossip columnist from the notorious British tabloid paper, to run the indie weekly's newsdeck.

Mel Myers comes from the Star's scandal and gossip column Bitches column, and will presumably now be examining the private lives of the likes of the Strokes and the White Stripes.

"Mel is at the top of her field in delivering exciting entertainment news stories and her enthusiasm, knowledge, and reputation for going above and beyond the call of duty to get a story are well known," NME editor Conor McNicholas told the Guardian.

Ms Myers, who told the paper she "can't wait to swap soap stars for guitars", will also presumably be expected to drink loads of alcohol judging by the recruitment advert that NME placed in the Guardian the previous month.

"You'll be prepared to work long hours ligging to deliver that killer headline," the Help Wanted ad specified.

"And equally important, you'll be able to hold your drink as well as your nerve."

Conor McNicholas was previously the editor of NME sister publication Muzik.
