Zac Foley, the bass player from 90s indie/dance band EMF died last week (January 3rd) aged just 31. The band's official site was deluged with messages of condolences this week, though the circumstances of his death remain unclear (a statement called for press and fans to "respect the privacy of Zac's family and EMF").

The band shot to worldwide stardom with their very first single Unbelievable in 1990 and gained a justified reputation as enthusiastic hedonists. Going on to sell 2 million copies of their debut album Schubert Dip they nevertheless failed to match their initial success and like fellow dance fusionists and friends Jesus Jones, eventually faded from public view almost entirely.

A message from Jesus Jones' Iain Baker posted on EMF's site this week said the band are devastated by his death.

"EMF always seemed to be a band who were always taken at face value: the crazy hyperactive kids at the centre of a chaotic storm of bad behaviour," his message says.

"However, all of them struck me as being thoughtful genuine people underneath it all; sometimes a little taken aback (and a little frightened-) by the success of it all. Zac was the embodiment of all of that..... a caner (heavy drinker and/or drug user) for sure: but dig a little deeper and there lurked a real and caring person, one who'll be missed a great deal."
