Britain's best paid DJs for 2001 were Paul Oakenfold, Judge Jules and John Digweed, according to the latest Sunday Times survey of Britain's Top 500 earners.

Oakey made £4million (US$6.5m), and Jules and Digweed £2million each, with Jules apparently purchasing a '£1million Ibiza home in cash' from just 7 days work on the island. The Radio 1 DJ, however, questioned the survey's accuracy, telling Skrufff this week that the figures are 'pure fantasy'.

"I think the Sunday times picked their figures out of thin air. It's the sort of piece you'd expect to see in a tabloid, not a so-called quality paper," said Jules.

"The villa's value was overstated by a factor of five, and if I earned that much from DJing in Ibiza I would have retired years ago."

"Suffice to say, the Sunday Times got this piece of information from an article that appeared in the Daily Star earlier in the year. I think that says it all," he continued.

"If the basis of their research was similar for each individual they focused on, the entire supplement lacks any credibility whatsoever."

Another DJ appearing on the list was DJ Sonique (apparently earning £1.6 million) who the paper quoted as saying "it's ridiculous how much DJs earn playing other people's records!" a statement Jules also found unconvincing.

"I'm sure she was taken out of context, because it's a daft thing for any DJ to say, and she's no fool," he said. Pointing out that his fees vary enormously depending on the size and type of event he plays at, Jules admitted his appearance on the list hadn't been an entirely negative experience, however.

"It was nice to be surrounded by some of my Arsenal idols and Arsene Wenger in the income league," he quipped.
