Norman Jay Says God Save the Queen

Norman Jay was awarded an MBE (Member of the British Empire) by the Queen this week though revealed that he'd initially thought the honour was a hoax.

"I almost missed out on it. I did not take the first letter seriously," said Norman. "Its the biggest thing to happen to me. My parents will be proud."

The 42 year old West London DJ is one of the most popular DJs in the world, and his Goods Times sound system has become one of the key spots in Notting Hill's annual street party, Carnival. Renowned for playing good time dance music crossing multiple genres, his unusual (for DJs) humility has always stood out, throughout his 20 year career.

"I think too much emphasis is placed on the DJs," Norman told Skrufff's Angie Ng last Christmas. "The crowd is what makes it work; not necessarily the music and even less so the DJs."

"Deep down, me and Joey are still punters. We don't finish the club then go on to the next gig or wherever in a limo. Even when we do parties in London, we get on the same night buses as people who've just been in the club."
