Nicky Holloway On Ibiza: I'd Rather Go To Thailand

Ibiza's contemporary club culture has been over-run by British clubs who've turned the island into an extension of the UK, according to seminal acid house DJ Nicky Holloway.

"I think I preferred it the way it was, it was a little bit of a sanctuary, a place to escape to, to get away from the English club scene and to go somewhere that wasn't surrounded by all the English clubbers," said Holloway writing on his website Nickyholloway.com.

"When I turn around and see some of the big posters and some of these English clubs on the Island. I don't think 'Great! They're here!'. I find myself thinking, 'Shit - I wish they'd all fuck off!' I wish that the Spanish clubs had kept it to themselves. We're not getting anything different in Ibiza anymore. And that's a great shame."

According to Holloway (who along with Paul Oakenfold, Danny Rampling and Johnny Walker virtually invented acid house after taking ecstasy at Amnesia) the island's lost its "Balearic" music vibe when DJs mixed up many different styles of music.

"No-one would dare play an off the wall record in one of the main clubs during peak time today, because the kids would stand there pulling their faces not really understanding it," said Nicky.

"I don't want to be too negative about Ibiza, though, I'll probably end up visiting again this season," Holloway told Skrufff.

"But I don't take drugs or drink anymore, so I'd rather go to Thailand. It's also half the price."
