Britain's upcoming reclassification of cannabis to Class C is likely to be accompanied by 'coercive abstinence' policies against drug users including electronic sniffer dogs at night club doors, according to Legalise Cannabis Alliance spokesperson Don Barnard.

"To catch drug users (the British) government has introduced a raft of strategies without the public being aware of the consequences," Mr Barnard warned this week. He also suggested that both police and private sniffer dogs will increasingly be used outside clubs and at festivals, stations and on the street.

His warnings reflect what's already happening in Sydney, Australia, where a private company ESI Protective has just launched a new service, hiring out sniffer dogs by the hour.

"How many parents have not turned out their kid's bedroom to make sure there's not something in there that shouldn't be there-" ESI spokesperson Drew Hyland asked, speaking to the Herald Sun last week. "This is just a more technical way of doing that."

"We're not trying to catch druggies," he claimed. "We're there to help parents that are truly concerned for their children."
