DJ Godfather's New Album: Ghetto Tech>Detroit

Ghetto tech pioneer producer DJ Godfather has teamed up with Urban Substance to release his first mix CD in the UK Ghetto Tech>Detroit. Including stacks of his own tracks as well several from DJ Assault, the collection is a machine gun paced overview of one of Detroit's less well known sub genres that combines elements of hip hop, electro and Miami Bass.

"This is music that comes not to impress but to party," the sleeve notes suggest. "Bitches get naked, playas represent and everyone else out your finer feelings on hold and revel in the freaky, filthy sound of the Motor City's clubs and bars."

Not one for the ladies then, even though it's been produced by top London charmer Oliver Way.

Danny Rampling Unveils His Turntable Symphony

Legendary house DJ Danny Rampling returns with a new mix album for React Records, some six months after he departed Radio 1 in somewhat acrimonious circumstances. Turntable Symphony, a single CD mix of proper vocal garage records (garage in the old sense) includes cuts from Todd Terry, El Padrinos (Danny's track with Dave Lee aka Joey Negro) and Mondo Grosso plus stacks of accapellas seamlessly intermixed.

"Turntable Symphony is how I feel the ultimate house music set should be constructed," says Danny. "Using accapellas to heighten the soulful experience and adding uptempo tracks played in a tasteful way for that underground energy."

Turntable Symphony is out on September 9 on React. Danny also shortly sets off to Italy to play 10 dates for his summer Love Groove tour.

Dino Lenny Joins the Wu Tang Clan

In what's a curious collaboration house stalwart Dino Lenny has teamed up with Sunz of Man and the RZA from notorious Staten Island hip hop crew the Wu Tang Clan to produce a single called Barbed Wire.

Musically, it's pumping house (almost in a Jason Nevins Run DMC style) while over the top, looped samples of the hip hoppers provide some vocal distraction. Given the pedigree of all involved, the result is somewhat disappointing with few distinguishing characteristics marking it out for serious (presumably intended) crossover success.

Sultan 32 Presents Earth n Bass Volume 1

Bebel Gilberto, Temple Of Sound (featuring Transglobal Underground's Neil Sparkes and Count Dubulah) and Manau Chau are some of the standout producers on Sultan 32's new mix CD, based on his Globe Sonic parties in New York.

As the title suggests, the CD combines broadly drum & bass style rhythms, with a bewilderingly wide range of world music sounds and vibes from the Kalahari Bushmen to Ethiopia's Gigi (singing in her native Amharic language though remixed by Bill Laswell).

Peter Kruder's another star remixer involved, taking on Bebel Gilberto's Tanto Tempo in typically original and enticing style to deliver the album's finest moment.

Chicago's K Alexi Prepares to Take Them All

"Pills, Pills, more pills, I take this one, and that one, the red one, the purple one, ,,aah, fuck it.. I just take 'em all." Chicago DJ and producer K Alexi's forthcoming single Take Them All, is a Green Velvet style acid/ electro oddity with equal potential to become a serious clubland anthem. Uplifting and explicit, its catchy chorus to pilling and fucking will strike chords particularly in Ibiza, where K himself this year will be spinning at El Divino and Ministry (Pacha).

K Alexi was one of Chicago's original acid house pioneers, recording several house tunes in the mide 80s with Risque Rhythm Team. His best known production to date remains All For Lee-Sah, which Derrick May's Transmat released in 1991, though Take Em All could easily rewrite his story.

"The 312 EP" is out on Kickin Records on 5th August.
