King Tubby, Union Square & Friends

"Music stripped to the bone. Bass and drums bared and exaggerated, the vocal reduced to a sound bite, other instruments allowed to colour the mix in various places. Lots of spaces with some places occupied to define the limits of those spaces."

The above definition of Dub appears on the sleeve notes of a new dub reggae compilation Dub: More Bass Culture, which almost totally consists of King Tubby Tracks. Tubby is one of the acclaimed pioneers of the style, having engineered many of its key tracks from the key players. Lee Perry, Gregory Isaacs, Delroy Wilson and Dennis Brown are just some of the people he recorded, with, all of whom feature on this excellent collection of Jamaican music.

Dub: More Bass Culture is out shortly on Union Square Music.
