DJ Shadow and Thomas Bangalter are just two of the producers appearing on James Lavelle's forthcoming mix CD for Global Underground, which marks a radical change in direction for the label previously synonymous with progressive house.

The double CD is based around a set the former Mo Wax chief played at Barcelona's Nitsa Club in June and combines his well known first love of breaks with more housier tunes and tempos.

"I'm doing a Global Underground album and that's going to be a challenge because it's the first time they're doing something which isn't in the traditional vein of house or progressive house," Lavelle told Skrufff in March.

"I'll basically be building on what I play at Fabric, that's my style and I'm going to push that further and to more people. I also hope to be touring with that album as well."

The compilation CD confirms Lavelle's continuing career renaissance as a DJ after his record label career as founder and chief of Mo Wax records saw him experience a meteoric rise and fall throughout the 90s. Just two years ago, the erstwhile media darling was virtually invisible after a backlash saw him walking away from Mo Wax altogether.

"When I look back at Mo Wax and how it was 8 years ago, it reminds me of the kind of situation where a label like International Gigolo DJ is at now," he said.

"Though DJ Hell (Gigolo's boss) is in a great position because he's 40 and he's had loads of experience of running labels before and he's cracked it. Good on him. The beauty of something like Mo Wax was the fact that it was completely and utter haphazard; the lunatics were running the asylum and it was chaos."
