Trance music's enduring commercial popularity is down to the fact it's both intelligent and mature, according to two of its most prominent practitioners, John 00 Fleming and Ferry Corsten. The trance-tastic duo were speaking to DJ magazine in a feature examining the genre's surprising renaissance in the magazine's latest Top 100 DJ poll, which saw DJ Tiesto ousting Sasha at number 1.

"The music I play is intelligent and highly polished," claimed Fleming. "I remember Jeff Mills being gobsmacked (amazed) by what I was playing, asking where I got it from," he said.

Corsten was equally assertive about the much-maligned style suggesting a more progressive element has replaced 'cheesy synth riffs'.

"Trance is more serious, I can hear it in my own productions," said Corsten. "I try to keep the rhythms going more and the sounds I use are more aggressive."
