Public drinking in the streets of Ibiza Town is to be outlawed this season, following "a barrage of complaints by local residents".

"The image of people drinking (alcohol) in the street with bottles at their sides is not the image we want for our town," said Mayor of Ibiza Town Xico Torres(Ibiza Online). Parts of the harbour area near Pacha and El Divino also face closure throughout the summer, local paper Ibiza Sun reported this week, following a council decision to finish construction of a new sea wall.

This winter, the island has been lashed by unusually fierce storms with beaches losing an estimated 400,000 cubic metres of sand, the Sun revealed. Authorities are reportedly hoping to replenish the beaches in time for the summer season, which gets going in June.
