Up to 50% of American undergraduates have "non-traditional piercings", the Independent reported this week, suggesting that authorities are set to crackdown on the craze, over fears of infections. According to a survey of New York students (at Pace University) 29% of females had navel piercings, 5% nipples and 2% their genitals.

"The most commonly infected site is the navel which is a dirty place bacteriologically," said Doctor Lester Mayes from Pace. "They take 6 to 9 months to heal, even under the best of circumstances."
