Gatecrasher Take London

Gatecrasher's first ever event in London last weekend was a massive success, packing Heaven with more enthusiastic clubbers than the venue's presumably ever jammed in before. Glow stick waving crasher kids squeezed in alongside curious gays and more than a few northerners to hear Paul Van Dyk playing a four hour set of uplifting trance, while upstairs Sandy Rivera played disco tinged party style house to a slightly more London style crowd.

Gatecrasher's owners will presumably have been sighing with relief on the night, following their recent decision to reduce events at their Sheffield home from weekly to monthly. The club has also always been tightly associated with the North which could easily have impacted on fickle southern clubbers (Gatecrasher's famed spiky haired "Crasherkid" image, for example, never happened in London).

Rival superclub owners could also be pleased following recent comments from Gatecrasher chief Simon Raines, to the effect that UK clubland is in crisis.

"You've got to be worried when a club like Gatecrasher says they can't sustain a weekly night anymore. It shows how serious the downturn is," Godskitchen press officer Ed King told 7 magazine last week.

"Clubbers aren't stupid and they also like to see new ideas and new and exciting DJs and artists."

Gatecrasher's next London event is on May 31 when Smokin Jo and Mauro Picotto headline.
