Ministry Of Sound's decision to splash out a reported £2million (US$3m) advance on new electro starlets Fischerspooner is already looking high risk, following an unusually harsh review of the band's debut album "1" in this week's Observer.

Labelling the record "Nine tracks of unexceptional old school electronica", the newspaper suggested the album has "precious little variation in sound or texture, while tunes are "mysteriously absent".

"At ground zero on planet pop, it's as worn out as Gary Numan's hairpiece", they concluded.

The review followed a feature in The Times, which, while defending the prospects of the new electro ("electroclash") sound in general, was similarly dismissive of Fischerspooner's individual prospects.

"Despite the whiff of hype and opportunism surrounding acts such as Fischerspooner, the electroclash sound has long-established underground roots," they suggested.

Speaking to Skrufff's Benedetta Ferraro last year, Fischerspooner's Casey Spooner admitted that music for the New York duo was less important than image.

Fischerspooner have also just announced details of a live show in London and will be playing at the Bridge on May 30. DJ Hell will also be Djing at the early evening event which runs between 8pm and 1am.
