Education authorities in Florida are introducing urine tests to detect underage tobacco smokers, according to newspaper reports this week.

"Tobacco use can be devastating. We felt it needed to stand with the other drugs," said Gloria Spizey, the county's coordinator for Safe and Drug-Free Schools (Associated Press).

All 27 million American teenagers already face random drug tests at school, following a recent ruling from the Supreme Court, a move Rolling Stone magazine suggested makes attending school in the States "an experience straight out of Orwell's 1984."
