Derrick May to Perform at Montreux

Detroit, MI, July 10, 2002 - The Montreux Jazz Festival, an event famous for pushing music to high levels of awareness and appreciation is now in its 36th year of production. To round out the presence of jazz in all its forms, festival founder and creative chair, Claude Nobs is careful to present music for people of the world to enjoy. With the recent explosion of electronic music in the minds and imaginations of enthusiasts everywhere, it did not take long for Claude to call upon one of the godfathers of techno, the innovator himself, Mr. Derrick May.

Derrick will be one of the headliners performing at the 2002 Montreux Jazz Festival set along the crystal waters of Lake Geneva in Montreux, Switzerland. The world renowned Festival is a masterpiece of sights and sounds. The picturesque lakeside promenade is lined with colorful kiosks showcasing clothing, jewelry and cuisine from around the world. The shoreline bazaar bustles with activity every evening and the Congress Centre is ready to welcome stars from all around the world. This year, such legends as David Bowie, Eryka Badhu, Herbie Hancock, Paul Simon, Air, Master at Work and others will be performing.

For 16 days, more than 250,000 jazz purists as well as avid listeners of rock, pop, reggae, world music and electronic music will migrate to Montreux for an elevated musical experience. More than 500 hours of free music will be performed on outside stages while select performances will take place in one of two state-of-the-art music halls, Stravinski Auditorium and Miles Davis Hall, where this Saturday July 13th Derrick will be gracing the decks for a special two-hour DJ set.

Derrick's hectic DJ schedule takes him to six of the seven continents so performing on a world stage is not new. But Miles Davis Hall is no ordinary stage. The younger brother of Stravinski Auditorium, a full-size performance hall designed for classical music, Miles Davis Hall is an imposing space featuring impeccable acoustics and loudspeaker technologies powered by the highly acclaimed Meyer Sound Laboratories, Inc.

For Derrick, the invitation is yet another mark of success for both himself and his influential record label, Transmat Records. In 1987, Derrick May created Transmat Records as a launch pad for a string of monumental releases including Nude Photo", "The Dance" and the massively influential "Strings of Life".

Since then, Derrick and his Transmat record label have been recognized by the world as one of the leading forces behind the Detroit-based Techno revolution. With Derrick leading the way, Transmat Records is poised to continue leaving their undeniable mark on the stages of Montreux and anywhere else his innovative sound is heard.
