Virtually every dance acts signed to EMI and Virgin could be dropped, according to a report in the latest issue of NME examining the music group's upcoming cutbacks. The global group are set to cut 400 acts from their roster imminently, with even Massive, Attack, The Pet Shop Boys and the Chemical Brothers at risk, NME suggested.

The report followed another in the Daily Telegraph which suggested nine out of ten acts fail.

"Some interesting facts have emerged," said the paper's pop critic Neil McCormick. "Only 5% (1 in 20) of major label releases make a profit and big record companies need to sell 500,000 copies of a CD just to break even."

Whilst it would appear highly unlikely that the likes of the Chemicals, Daft Punk and Massive Attack would be dropped some dance acts amongst NME's list look could be at risk including acts as big as the Pet Shop Boys (whose new album Release NME branded this week as "Their worst album to date".

An artist even more vulnerable potentially is Adam F, whose latest single "Where's My" just scraped into Britain's top 40 at 36 last week. Marketed as "the new Dr Dre" last Autumn, he's nevertheless failed to match the hype, with his all star cast hip hop album Kaos struggling to make an impact.
