Conservatives Promise To Re-Criminalise Cannabis

Cannabis users in Britain will be sent to jail, under a new zero tolerance drugs policy proposed by Britain's opposition party the Conservative party. The law would come into effect if the Conservatives managed to gain re-election and could threaten millions of otherwise law abiding citizens with prison.

Shadow home secretary Oliver Letwin told the Sunday Telegraph his draconian strategy had been inspired by a visit to Sweden, where zero tolerance towards any drug use is rigorously enforced.

"Just 11 per cent of Swedish schoolchildren have tried drugs compared with 45 per cent in Britain," he said.

"The Swedes realise that rather than waiting for young people to be tempted on the conveyor belt of drugs, it is better to prevent the problem in the first place."

The Conservative party's new approach came six months after a study by the respected National Inhalant Prevention Council (NIPC) linked glue sniffing with zero tolerance.

"In Europe, inhalant abuse is particularly problematic in Sweden, the only European country that maintains a U.S.-style zero tolerance approach to drugs," a report revealed last March (drugpolicy.org)

"Sweden is also the only European Country that has higher prevalence rates of glue sniffing among 16 year olds than marijuana."
