Christopher Lawrence Wins America's Best DJ

West Coast DJ Christopher Lawrence won the first "Best DJ" award at last week's Dancestar Awards, which took place at the Miami Winter Music Conference. Lawrence's award was voted for by 1,000 characters from America's dance music industry and saw him beating off impressive competition from the likes of Danny Tenaglia And Masters At Work.

Chatting to Skrufff's Jonty Adderley just days before his victory, he admitted he felt ambivalent about DJ awards.

"I try not to give them too much weight because ultimately you're only as good as your last set but it's nice to be recognised; to be considered one of the top six DJs in the country from which people can choose, is quite a privilege," he said.

"BPM magazine recently came out with their America's top 50 DJs and I was number 6 in there. You know the issue's coming out and you get really nervous, telling yourself, it doesn't matter, then as soon as it comes out we all run to the magazine store to see where we are. I can't say that they don't matter because they do but the most important thing remains the parties themselves."

Christopher Lawrence's latest compilation CD Around The World is out now on Moonshine Records.
